Spend a night under the dazzling stars in the Sahara Desert, be entertained by local musicians in the High Atlas Mountains, explore the souks and medina of charming Marrakech, and visit the backdrop to some of the most famous movies ever made at Ait Benhaddou. This exciting 8-day trip is perfect for all solo travellers looking to get a taste of Southern Morocco. We’ll start things off in mystical Marrakech, home of street foods stalls, entertainers and meandering souks. From here we’ll head west to the popular coastal town of Essaouira for a night and experience a wonderful sunset on the beach. The next day we’ll be travelling to the High Atlas Mountains for a local experience with the Amazigh people before heading into the Sahara Desert for an amazing camel ride over the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. After spending a night under the stars in the desert, we’ll travel to Dades Gorge, a beautiful area with stunning scenery, before heading to the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou, where many famous movies have been filmed. Day 1 – Arrive Marrakech
When you arrive in Marrakech, make your way to the hotel for check-in, which will be from 2pm onwards. Today is an arrival day so there are no planned activities. If you arrive in time, you can join your guide and the rest of the group for dinner to get to know your fellow travellers! Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 2 – Marrakech / Essaouira
After breakfast we’ll be leaving Marrakech and driving to the charming seaside town of Essaouira. The blue and white medina of Essaouira has its history steeped in piracy, slave trading, art, music and gastronomy, and the shopping here is a delight – laid back and hassle free! We’ll visit the fishing port, the promenade and La Skala, take a walk on the vast beach, eat delicious seafood and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Overnight in Essaouira.
Day 3 – Essaouira / Atlas Mountains
Today we will be driving up into the Atlas Mountains for a day with the Amazigh People. When we reach the mountains, we’ll be taking a short hike up into a mountain village and stopping for lunch with the most incredible views. We’ll be spending the night in the mountains and evening entertainment will be provided by local musicians.
Day 4 – Atlas Mountains / Agdz
After breakfast today, we’ll be crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and heading to Agdz, enjoying superb mountain views and seeing traditional Berber villages on the way. Overnight in Agdz.
Day 5 – Agdz / Sahara Erg Chebbi Dunes
Discover more of southern Morocco today as you cross vast desert landscapes from the ancient Kasbah’s of the Draa Valley and its extensive date palm groves, to the golden dunes of the stunning Sahara Desert. We’ll be heading to the Erg Chebbi Dunes and upon arrival will experience a camel ride at sunset before heading to a nomadic camp in the middle of the desert. Tonight, you will have dinner around a campfire under the bright stars of the Sahara Desert.
Day 6 – Sahara / Merzouga / Dades Gorge
After breakfast this morning we’ll be heading through Merzouga and will eventually end up at Dades Gorge. On the way, we’ll stop in the town of Rissani to sample the famous Medfouna local pizza and the colourful souks of this area. We’ll also make a visit to a fossil and mineral museum to see real life dinosaur bones! Once we reach the gorge area, we’ll be heading out to explore Todra Gorge, a 300m high gorge with crystal clear water running all the way through it. Overnight at a local guesthouse in Dades Gorge.
Day 7 – Dades Gorge / Ouarzazate / Marrakech
After breakfast, we’ll be driving through Dades Gorge, stopping for photos of the unique rock formations and some fine examples of ancient Kasbahs. Following the Dades Valley, we’ll drive through the rose valley, where fragrant roses are cultivated and harvested for the precious oil. The next stop on our journey will be in Ouarzazate, and the location of many famous movies including Gladiator; the UNESCO site of Ait Benhaddou. In the afternoon we’ll take the high atlas road back to Marrakech. Dinner will be arranged for the last night of your Southern Morocco tour. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 8 – Depart Marrakech
This morning we will begin our city tour of Marrakech. You will visit a beautiful 19th century palace, an interesting museum of African artefacts, and of course the Djemaa el Fna Square and the souks. You will have the rest of the day at leisure until you need to transfer to the airport for international flights.

Hosts One of our local guides will be your main point of contact throughout the trip. They will meet you at the airport and stay with you for the duration of the tour. Our guides are very knowledgeable, if you need anything at all, just ask them!

Clothing During the summer months of May through September, the weather will be hot, so pack light, loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. You will also need to cover your arms and legs at religious sites, so make sure you have long trousers and tops with long sleeves. In the cooler months, the daytime temperatures are still pretty warm, but it can get cold at night, especially in the desert. So if you are travelling between November and March, it’s recommended to take some warm layers with you.

Health Always seek medical advice from your doctor or travel nurse before you travel and make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date, especially when travelling to Africa. Remember that your travel insurance may not cover you if you do not have up-to-date vaccinations.

Driving Please be aware that this trip involves a lot of driving because of the amount of places we visit. Most days will involve some driving, and some days these drives will be quite long, but it does mean that you will see a lot of the country in a relatively short period of time!
