Travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai before experiencing Laos’ highlights with other Solo Travellers on an amazing 16 day journey through two of South East Asia’s finest on this Laos & Thailand tour. Begin your journey in bustling Bangkok before discovering the ancient city of Ayutthaya as you travel north in search of Chiang Mai, famed for its elephants, temples and endless street food. A short flight over to Laos will take you to Luang Prabang, home to the incredible Kuang Si Waterfalls. Continue your journey to the sleepy riverside town of Vang Vieng to admire some of Laos’ finest landscapes, to Vientiane, the country’s friendly capital with cafes’ and bakeries galore, and finally to Don Khong for a chance to see the famous Irrawaddy dolphins as you take a boat ride down the Mekong River.

Day 1 – Arrive Bangkok
Day 2 – Bangkok / Ayutthaya / Phitsanulok
For the first full day of your Laos & Thailand Tour, you will be transferred to the historic city of Ayutthaya, where you will visit the Wat Phanan Choeng, Yai Chai, Mongkol Temple and the UNESCO World Heritage Ayutthaya Historical Park. Continue on to Lopburi, one of Thailand’s oldest cities, where you will visit Phra Prang Sam Yot, a Khmer style landmark very similar to those found at Angkor in Cambodia. Overnight in Phitsanulok.
Day 3 – Phitsanulok / Sukhothai / Lampang
After breakfast you will be taken to see the Buddha Chinnarat, considered the finest in Thailand, before departing for Sukhothai Historical Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to 21 historical sites, including Wat Sri Chum and Wat Srisawai, and is best accessed by bike. Continue to Si Satchanalai Historical Park another UNESCO listed site, before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant. Continue the drive to Lampang, where you will spend the night.
Day 4 – Lampang / Lamphun / Chiang Mai
After breakfast you will be taken by horse and cart to visit the local market at Baan Sao Nok. You will then visit the most important temple in Lampung, Wat Don Tao, followed by Wat Lampang Luang Phrathat and Wat Phra That Hariphunchai Woramahawiharn (bit of a mouthful!) in Lamphun. After lunch at a local restaurant you will be driven to Chiang Mai, passing old city walls and street markets on the way. Make a visit to Wat Phrathad at the top of Mount Doi Suthep for stunning views over the city. Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 5 – Chiang Mai
After breakfast, you will be heading out to visit an elephant site located at Mea Taman in the Chiang Dao district. You will have lunch at the site, and afterwards board a bamboo raft to take you down a very picturesque stretch of the Mea Ping river. Continue to Baan Tong Luang, a hill tribe cultural preservation village. Overnight in Chiang Mai.
Day 6 – Chiang Mai / Luang Prabang
After breakfast you will have the day free to explore the city before being transferred to the airport for flights to Luang Prabang to begin the Laos section of this Laos & Thailand tour. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel and have the rest of the evening free to explore the amazing night market. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Day 7 – Luang Prabang / Pak Ou Caves
After breakfast you will visit the Royal Palace Museum, before taking a boat upstream along the Mekong River to reach the mysterious Pak Ou Caves; two caves crammed with thousands of gold Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. When you get back to the city you will visit the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, the traditional Art and Ethnology Centre to learn about the various Laos cultures, and the Wat Siphouthabaht to watch the sunset. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Day 8 – Luang Prabang / Kuang Si Waterfalls
This morning, very early, you will have the option to see the monks receiving alms from the faithful residents. From here you can then take a short visit to see the local morning market. After breakfast, you will ascend the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for panoramic views of the city and the Mekong River. You will then visit Wat Visoun, Luang Prabang’s oldest temple which was once home to the Prabang Buddhas. You will then be transferred to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfalls, one of the most stunning waterfalls in all of South East Asia – take your swimsuit! Before returning to Luang Prabang you will stop at a butterfly park and visit the Ock Pop Tock Living Centre. Overnight in Luang Prabang.
Day 9 – Luang Prabang / Vang Vieng
After breakfast you will take the scenic route by road to Vang Vieng. You will stop at Sala Phoukhoun, the highest peak in Northern Laos, for panoramic views of the region, Phatang Mountain to admire the beautiful scenery and at a number of local villages on the way. Overnight in Vang Vieng.
Day 10 – Vang Vieng
After breakfast you will be crossing the Nam Song River for a short drive to Tham Pou Kham (Golden Crab Cave). After passing through a small entrance hole, you will descend 100m into the ground. Don’t worry, your guide will have a packed lunch for you. Considered by many as Vang Vieng’s most important cave, the Tham Chang became a home for migrants who settled near the town’s Southern Meuang Xong Village to grow vegetables. Its high location offers perfect views of Vang Vieng, which is one of the reasons the entire village moved there to sit out the war. Overnight in Vang Vieng.
Day 11 – Vang Vieng / Nam Ngum / Vientiane
After breakfast, you will Nam Ngum, stopping on the way at Ban Keun, famous for its salt extraction plant and a village that distils the local Laos whiskey. On arrival at Nam Ngum Lake, you will embark on a long tail boat and enjoy a leisurely cruise as you have some lunch. There will then be time for a cold drink at one of the many bars overlooking the lake. Beer Lao is excellent, just FYI. Overnight in Vientiane.
Day 12 – Vientiane / Buddha Park
After breakfast, visit Wat Si Muang, famous for its supernatural powers, Buddha Park¸ an unusual park filled with Buddhist and Hindu statues and Mai Savanh, to explore the textiles of the local Lao people. In the afternoon, you will visit one of the holiest sites in the country, That Luang, before experiencing a panoramic view of the capital as you climb the stairs to the top of Patuxai, Vientiane’s own ‘Arc de Triomphe’. Overnight in Vientiane.
Day 13 – Vientiane / Pakse / Don Khong
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for a domestic flight to Pakse. Upon arrival, you will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wat Phou. This spectacular pre-Angkorian temple sits amidst the rice terraces and waterways of Southern Laos. It was built by the rulers of the Khmer Empire before the construction of Angkor Wat and is still one of the most valued temples in Laos. Continue to Champassak to see samples of French colonial architecture before reaching the island of Don Khong, where you will spend the night.
Day 14 – Don Khong / 4000 Islands / Pakse
After breakfast, take a long-tail boat along the Mekong River to discover Laos’ 4000 islands. Take a tuk-tuk to visit the marvellous Liphi Waterfall, and if you are really lucky you might even see the freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins. When you return to the mainland at the fishing village of Ban Nakasang, you will be taken to Khone Papheng. This waterfall is considered one of the largest in South East Asia, right next to the Cambodia-Laos border, it is a truly magnificent site. You will then be driven back to Pakse where you will spend the night.
Day 15 – Pakse / Bangkok
This will be the last full day of your Laos & Thailand tour. After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for flights to Bangkok. Overnight in Bangkok.
Day 16 – Depart Bangkok

Clothing The weather will be mostly hot and humid in the day. You should also take some warm clothes and a waterproof jacket in case of tropical downpours (rare at this time of year, don’t worry). You will also need comfortable shoes.
Health The WHO recommends the following vaccinations before travelling to South East Asia: Diptheria & Tetanus, Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Polio, Typhoid, and Varicella.
